Meaningful Organization CANVAS

I love canvas. I do. They allow a visual and simple representation of key concepts. They are easy to use, easy to share, easy to change. So I got to the design board to develop a canvas that illustrates the main building blocks to build a future proof organization. The Meaningful Organization canvas is organizated around 3 categories 1-the ends: what your organization accomplishes 2- the people: the beating heart of your organization 3- the means: what your organization is using to get things done. 

ENDS

1- Purpose: Future proof organizations rely on an inspiring purpose as a main driver. Think of Patagonia and its purpose: “Build the best product, cause no unnecessary harm, use business to inspire and implement solutions to the environmental crisis”. So what is the purpose of your organization? Why does your organization exist? How is your purpose integrated in day to day operations?

2- Values: As described in previous posts, values are becoming the most vital elements to create engaging workspaces. Like at Atlassian where values are the first thing you see when entering the office building. So, what are the values that govern your organization? How to define them? How to change them?

3- Objectives: Sensing compared to planning is the way objectives are established in FPOs. Especially when it comes to resource allocation, targets and forecasts. So, how to quantify your purpose in terms of objectives? Does it involve budgeting? It is all done at once?

4- Leaders: No longer authoritarian or directive leadership is at play in  meaningful organizations but a servant and nurturing leadership . But what is the type of leader that you want to see in your organization? How do you nominate leaders? What are their responsibilities?

5- Motivations: Often money has been the sole driver of motivations in organizations. The rational is is to use social and intrinsic motivations to develop all the talents of everyone. So how should your organization compensate employees? What is the hiring/firing process? How can all talents be expressed in your organization?

6- Communication: Open communication and high levels of transparency are common characteristics of meaningful organizations where feedback is giving by peers on constant basis. So which processes are in the place to exchange information in your organization? How to enable more transparency? What is the feedback process in your organization?

7- Decisions: Everyone is empowered to decide in organizations like Ecole42 based on clear accountabilities. So how to create more autonomy in your organization?  What are the roles/domains of activities in your organization? Are all accountabilities well defined? What is the structure of power/authority in your organization?

8- Coordination: With the rise of trust as a main ingredient for coordination and exchange, new processes emerge and are not designed based on an over anticipation of issues. So how are activities coordinated in your organization? Which IT system(s) is (are) in place to support it? How are meetings organized? At which frequency?

9- Space: To be able to express all talents and thrive under high level of autonomy, the physical environment and the way offices are organized and look like are key to achieve more engagement of employees.  What is the most engaging interior design for your office? What makes you enjoy the space around you?
